Guide on How to Use Cutlery at the Table

It is likely that on some special occasion you have gone to eat at a restaurant and you have felt lost when you saw so much cutlery. What fork do we use first? What is this spoon for? Do not worry, we will tell you the basics so you know how to cope well in these circumstances.

How are the Cutlery Placed when Starting the Meal?

  • The knife is always placed to the right of the plate with the edge inwards.
  • The spoon is placed to the right of the knife.
  • The fork is placed is placed to the left of the plate with the tips up.
  • The dessert cutlery is placed on top of the plate and on other occasions they are placed at the time of serving. 

How Should We Use the Cutlery?

The basic thing that we must know is that the cutlery is used from the outside to the inside, that is, it starts with the cutlery furthest from the plate.

In the left area we find the forks, the one for fish will be left out and the one for red meat goes next to the plate.

On the right side of the plate we find the spoons and knives. The fish knife will be out while the meat knife is attached to the plate

Lastly, the dessert cutlery is placed on top of the plate.
